Mediterranean diet, the heart will stay healthy

The Mediterranean diet is the best choice to stay in shape and in good health. There are fewer risks of cardiovascular illness by following a Mediterranean diet.

A study revising 50 research studies and involving more than half a million people shows how following a typical Mediterranean diet can keep cardiovascular illness at bay. According to researchers at the University of Athens, who conducted an important study analysing the link between diet and cardiovascular diseases, Greek and Italian people who follow a Mediterranean diet are healthier and live longer. The results of this study were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and demonstrate how those who follow a diet based on traditional Greek or Italian food show a lower risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, compared to those who follow a typically western diet.

The Mediterranean diet, according to researchers, provides a whole series of beneficial effects in reducing metabolic problems and, therefore lowers the risk of obesity and high cholesterol ; two well know factors amongst the main causes of heart disease and cardiovascular illness.

Our results add to existing knowledge, and demonstrate even further the protective function and the importance lifestyle related factors, and eating habits have when relating to development and progression of metabolic problems.

What this all means is that with a rich supply of foods readily available in all our major supermarkets everyone can realistically follow a healthy diet with plenty of fish, vegetables and olive oil. By sticking to a low fat healthy diet we can all hope to keep the pounds off, live more healthily and live for longer.
