The Male Menopause

The Male Menopause or Andropause are terms used to describe the male equivalent of the female menopause. The female menopause is marked by the end of periods and a consequent imbalance of hormones which result in a number of outward symptoms, whereas the male version obviously does not. The existence of the male menopause is controversial and many dismiss it as a myth or something that just occurs to men as they get older.

Common symptoms include lagging concentration, general fatigue, aches and pains, libido bassa e problemi a raggiungere un’erezione . Some men can also experience depression, weight gain and irritability which let’s face it are not specific symptoms to the andropause even if the night sweats and hot flushes some men suffer are similar to signs of the female menopause. The fact remains that there is no obvious natural cause for the disorder in men, and causes are often rather complex. Some men find they experience troubles following an infection or testicular problems, however the exact causes are not clear cut. Many men visit their doctor several times presenting various problems and come away without any concrete answers about how they are feeling.

A tried and tested cure for the andropause is Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Much like HRT in women, TRT is used to address the hormone imbalance in men during this period of their life. TRT can be administered in the form of small pellets to be implanted into the buttocks, or a simple pill to be taken every day. Within a few months men notice a big difference in their mood and general well-being, and many revert back to the same lives they lead the previous year. Sadly not all men respond to hormone therapy and other avenues need to be explored. If you think you are going through the male menopause speak to your doctor and asked to be referred to an Andrologist, a male specialist doctor.
